Post by MrFlibble »

Interceptor Entertainment (yeah, the guys behind the Duke Nukem Reloaded project) have announced their remake of the Apogee classic FPS, Rise of the Triad:

Set for release on PC via Steam late this year, “Rise of the Triad” is packed with features that are sure to melt your face off:

  • Blast through over 20 of levels of explosive single-player action.
  • Unique multiplayer maps bring back all the fun and excitement of classic ROTT.
  • The full arsenal of over-the top weapons is back, including the Flamewall, Firebomb, Split Missile, Drunk Missile and, of course, the Excalibat!
  • The maniacal modes return, too, with God mode, Elasto mode, Mercury mode, Shrooms mode and everyone’s favorite, Dog mode!
  • Build your own levels, mods and share them with Valve’s Steamworks.
  • Offline single-player and multiplayer allows for instant action.
  • Find tons of secrets, collectables, special events and hidden areas to explore.
  • Get more than 100 achievements to add to your score, which is tracked on our worldwide leaderboard and stat-tracking system.
  • ROTT is bloodier and more ludicrous than ever, with full character and enemy dismemberment.
  • The iconic original soundtrack has been completely re-forged in the fires of heavy metal!
  • Nostalgia abounds with the option to play with all the original sounds and music.
  • Built on fully-licensed Unreal Engine 3 technology, ROTT will run on low-end PCs and push high-end PCs to their limits!

Ugh, that looks terrible. I see that they kept some of the mechanics, but it doesn't "feel" like ROTT at all. I especially dislike the heavy metal soundtrack, so cheesy.

Well, I also can't say I liked the new version of the music that is audible in those videos too. They still have some time and room for improvement though, and in any case it will probably stir some interest in the original game, and maybe also will come to be a decent game on its own (regardless of similarity to its predecessor).

On a side note, I'm starting to think I don't like how Unreal Engine 3 looks in general very much.

Hopefully the post-processing can be turned off. The thing that interests me the most is the openness to modification and the Steam workshop plans, so even if you don't like the whole "reboot", at least the community angle should be appreciated for trying.

It's nice to see a remake of a good game like ROTT but I agree, it doesn't capture the feel very well. ROTT had very few enclosed spaces (even those were mostly open to the sky) and it was quite bright too - none of this hiding in shadows business that's so modern. It also had much more of a warm orange tint in general, whereas like many modern games this seems to have a lot of cold blue (in the pics anyway.) It doesn't look that bad on its own, but I don't think it captures the light-hearted atmosphere that ROTT had.

Here's the new cover of Goin' Down the Fast Way:

Can't say I like it too much though, but it's fine.

Wow, another ROTT remix (a couple were just posted on the 3DR forums.) I see what you mean - it's not bad, but I'm not a fan of the genre. I think the only reason I like it is because the original tune was so good!

Somehow I feel that this particular remix has lost something important that was there in the original. The sequence of notes is still there but the music is somehow different. It may or may not be becuase of the heavy metal style of the remix; sometimes it's just that a remix/cover doesn't come together, even if technically it is of good quality.

Yes you're right. Like the games, the music had a light hearted, fun quality about it, and that doesn't really fit with the seriousness of most heavy metal music. I still find it interesting that Lee Jackson said ROTT wasn't his best work (as it was very early on in his musical career), but I think it's one of my favourite game soundtracks.
