A lot of original DOS games - to the Administrator

Post by Dynamite »

Hello! I'm a DOS amateur and I always play my old games with the software DosBox. For security I saved all my games and now I have 157 DOS games available to send you to add them to this site, if it is to your liking. They are complete, sharware or... (sorry) crkd. They are from 1989 to 1997, like, for example, Lemmings, California games II, NBA jam, Alone in the dark, etc.
Tell me if you are interested to this one: I'm happy to share all my games with this community.

That's a very generous offer. As you may be aware, there are a great many requirements for a game to be included on this site.

First and foremost, it must be legal to distribute the game. That means only games that were originally released as freeware or shareware, or any full version or commercial games that have verifiably been declared freeware by the copyright holder. It sounds like that would eliminate at least part of your collection.

Second, archives must be original, meaning that no files are hacked, cracked, hex-edited, modified, added or removed. If you acquired any of these games from questionable sources, that could further reduce the number of eligible games.

Finally, if your collection includes legally distributable games like shareware titles, it seems likely that we must already have at least some of those games on the site. Once all of those factors have been considered, I'd be very interested to know which games remain.

On the About page I mention that I don't accept files from other people. The reason for that policy is to be absolutely certain that all files on this site are legal, original, and free of viruses. For that reason, I would be more interested in having a list of the games, rather than the games themselves. I have a very reliable source for legal, original archives of shareware games, so there's a high probability that I can get any games that you have that aren't on the site yet from there.

Okay. Here are the games that I know had shareware versions. Games that already appear on the site have links.

BALLOON CHALLENGE
CD-MAN
CAPTAIN COMIC
CHRISTMAS LEMMINGS
DOOM
DUKE NUKEM 3D
EPIC PINBALL
EPIC PUZZLE PACK - ROBBO, HEARTLIGHTS, ELECTROMAN
GOBLINS 3
HERETIC
INDIANA JONES AND THE FATE OF ATLANTIS
LEMMINGS
MICEMEN
OILCAP
QUAKE
RADIX
SKUNNY -- there are six Skunny games
SKUNNY KART
SKYROADS
TYRIAN
*** Updated after this post ***
ALIEN BREED
ALONE IN THE DARK
ANOTHER WORLD
CANNON FODDER
MORTAL KOMBAT 2
NASCAR RACING
PINBALL FANTASIES
PRINCE OF PERSIA
QUARANTINE
RAYMAN

SERF CITY
SILVERBALL
SIMCITY
SIMCITY 2000
STRIFE
SYNDICATE
TRANSPORT TYCOON DELUXE
THE BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
TUBES
WARCRAFT 2
ZOOL

I have copies of the missing games on the above list on my hard drive. The interesting entry here is the Epic Puzzle Pack. Maciej Miasik was kind enough to declare the puzzle pack freeware, so I would be interested in having the registered version.

Of the remaining games, many of them I am certain never had shareware versions, but I have memories or suspicions that some of them did. If anyone can identify any legally distributable games from the remainder of the list, please say so. I will, of course, check it out myself, but I'm going to bed right now.

OK, DOSGuy, if you desire to have the registered version of Epic puzzle pack I can send it you: the one I have is the complete version.
The other games without the asterisk are all sharware.
Do you prefer I send the files to one of your e-mail addresses or directly attached at this topic?

Strife, Silverball, Quarantine, Cannon Fodder had shareware versions. Cannon Fodder's might be a bit tough to look for since its shareware version was under MVP Publishing.
Most of the titles on the list do have demos, but they're completely non-interactive.

Yeah, I'm not really interested in non-interactive demos. It's just sitting through an advertisement. I want to play games!

Thanks a lot for your help with that list, leilei.

Hi there,

I noticed "Alien Breed-Tower Assault" on this Team 17 fan page, along with other demos:

I'm not familiar with the Alien Breed series. This appears to be a playable demo of a commercial game. I'll check it out.

I remember having the first two games on my Amiga 500 quite a few years ago. Excellent stuff. I see the Amiga Disk files are freely available on that site linked above (looks legit). Worth a look for retrogamers. I think DOS ports of these were available, but they weren't very good from what I remember (lower quality graphics/sound and smaller levels).

dream17 isnt' team17's site so i don't trust it one bit. Team17 has cracked down on people distributing their games illegally in the past before

According to the Wikipedia article about Dream17, they got permission from "Martyn Brown, Creative Director at Team17, to allow the site to host full downloads of Team17's Amiga back-catalogue." I'm sure that the article was written by members of Dream17, but it sounds plausible.

well people often write articles of their own sites in wikipedia for the sake of self-promotion, i'm surprised it didn't get a VFD.

It's true that the article contains no references. Legal permission to distribute copyrighted material is a pretty important claim, so I've placed a {{fact}} tag in the article. Hopefully someone from Dream17 will notice and provide some proof.

Looks like that drew some attention. Soon afterwards, the article was nominated for deletion and speedily deleted.
