Officially released game music/soundtracks

Post by MrFlibble »

During the 2000s, companies would release official music packs for their games. Those files were large and often hosted by major gaming sources like FilePlanet and GameFront. Recently site like these have started going down, and in this view it makes sense to archive not only games themselves but also whatever official extras were released for them.

For example, Apogee/3D Realms released the full soundtrack for Stargunner, with a link from the game's page on 3D Realms' website to FileShack, a no longer existing game file source. The soundtrack was also uploaded to FilePlanet but this is also unavailable now. Luckily the file was uploaded elsewhere, and can be downloaded from Softpedia.

There's a very informative thread in another forum where various official game soundtrack releases are discussed. Some are available from their respective composers' websites, for example, certain tracks from Need for Speed and Need for Speed II can be downloaded from Jeff van Dyck's site.

In some cases, individual tracks have been officially released in high quality, such as Grabbag (main theme from Duke Nukem 3D), available from 3D Realms. Some MP3s from the Age of Empires /Age of Kings soundtrack CD can be downloaded from Microsoft's FTP. Similarly, some tracks from C&C can be found, in MP3 and WAV format, at Westwood Studios' FTP (mirror).

The "Microsoft's FTP" link seem to wrongfully point to same adress as the "Need for Speed II" link.

Joe Siegler's post about the Stargunner soundtrack:
http://joe.siegler.net/2012/10/stargunner-music/

Also Interplay apparently have been distributing MP3 versions of the Descent II soundtrack but all download links on their tech support page are now broken.

Here's also an archived copy of Interplay's website from 2004 which lists all officially released MP3s at the time. The full CD soundtrack is available from a fan site, and I think the files in the single archive are identical to the ones that were availble from Interplay.

[Edit] Found a nice blog dedicated to free game soundtracks:

Apparently SkyRoads has one too:

The SkyRoads soundtrack has been hosted on the developer's website for years. Far Harbor is just linking back to Blue Moon's page at http://www.bluemoon.ee/history/skyroads ... index.html.
Today entirely the maniac there is no excuse with the article.

I've noticed that FilePlanet downloads are back online :) The Warcraft II MP3 Pack is available here.
