Re: Restoration of a few games' EXEs versions

Does this mean that you can produce a recreation of the original alpha executable without all that "keeper of the alpha" nonsense hacked into it? Or was the replaced text in the data files, not in the EXE? I don't recall encountering anything to do with the BBS or other such non-original text, so I...

Re: Restoration of a few games' EXEs versions

Think it's time for another update. Let's begin with a few initial notes: - It turned out the Blake Stone codebase had a silly typo specific to AOG. In the AOG versions of the enemy_t enum, en_goldmorphshot was mistakenly defined instead of en_arc_barrier. It was also used instead of en_arc_barrier ...

Re: Shadow Warrior free on Steam

BTW, just updating some more builds have been added. There is a currently a total of 8 such builds, including the 97-era leaked beta. Note that in one of them, the EXE is AEGIS-protected, and this protection hasn't been cracked so far. It isn't clear how difficult it'll be to break it, but we still ...

By Shadow Warrior Classic, do you mean the free GOG version or the Anthology version?
As said above, I refer to the Anthology version. But it is also true that the free GOG.com version has not been updated, it seems.

Re: Shadow Warrior free on Steam

Following a few circumstances I won't detail about, the above free release has been updated to include: - A previously leaked 1997 beta. - A never-seen-before 1996 alpha release. A discussion on the topic can be found here: https://forums.duke4.net/topic/9298-shadow-warrior-betas-released/ Please no...

Re: Restoration of a few games' EXEs versions

OK, I want to correct a few mistakes of mine. Afterwards, I'll ask about the new macros used in the sources recreation repository. 1. First, about Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold, I mistakenly mentioned in DHW and RGB that demo no. 3 is the first to be played in version 3.00. In fact, this is the case o...

Re: Restoration of a few games' EXEs versions

Hey there, Thanks for your comments on Reflection Keen / Reflection Catacomb Abyss, as well as trying it out! Generally I like your idea of taking inspiration from Chocolate Doom. As I said beforehand, there are still enough ways in which it isn't exactly like Chocolate Doom (e.g., some efforts are ...

Re: Restoration of a few games' EXEs versions

Hey there, While I don't have a lot of new actual contents to report about, there's still what to write. 1. To begin with, anybody who's been messing with the modified Wolf3D codebase from my repository should probably read this point. Not long ago, I've found out that Borland C++ effectively trunca...

Re: Restoration of a few games' EXEs versions

Speaking of Keen 1-3, did you ever intend to recreate the original EXE versions for that or at least port Chocolate Keen back to DOS? Heh, these ideas have surely been tempting; Especially the fact that DOS support was "skipped" while doing Chocolate Keen. As previously stated, though, I prefer to ...

Re: Restoration of a few games' EXEs versions

I doubt that turning DOS executables into DLLs is going to work, at least as far as executing low-level hardware stuff is concerned. On WinXP and above, you can't even read/write ports from a Win32 program. Only device drivers are allowed to execute such instructions. I don't know a thing about the...

Re: Restoration of a few games' EXEs versions

Hey there, Sorry for not responding earlier! Guess I can still add some comments of mine. I think I forgot to ask, do you have plans to process the executables of Corridor7 and Operation Body Count in a similar fashion? While this can surely be tempting (although it depends on the mood), and these g...

Re: jsDosbox testing and bug reporting

Hey there, it's great to see you finding the time to take care of this, despite possible difficulties! I've also made a few tests with Firefox 43.0.4 for Linux. - Don't think there's a lot of new to add about Keen 1 and POP. Keen 1 stopped outputting sounds at some point (although a silent noise cou...

Re: Restoration of a few games' EXEs versions

Thanks for the update! This is some really cool research. You're welcome! BTW, do you know if any similar detailed descriptions of code "evolution" exist for other games? The Cutting Room Floor Wiki aims to catalogue differences in assets/media, but frankly I don't know anything related to code exc...

Re: Proposal for DOS game package format

I think that I can see a point of yours here. I also have a directory with various "installations" of games - mostly for DOS, and when I want to have multiple versions, modifications and/or some other related files, I often use subdirectories, with no specific rule for the way things are organized. ...

Re: Restoration of a few games' EXEs versions

Hi again, I think Dec 25 may be a good time for an update! This time, it's about Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold again. With the possibility of a few really minor differences, you can now recreate the EXEs from the 1 and 6 episodes releases, versions 1.0 and 2.0. To begin with, it's probably not a surpr...
