The second game in the Mortal Kombat series and, some would say, not only the best game of the series, but one of the best fighting games of all time. Following Shang Tsung's defeat in the Earthrealm in Mortal Kombat, his master, Shao Kahn, brings the tournament to the Outworld. 12 selectable fighters (5 of them new to MKII), and 3 new unlockable characters, can be used to win the tournament and save the Earthrealm. Contrasting the cartoonish graphics of the other popular fighting game of the era, Street Fighter II and its many variants, Mortal Kombat II featured almost photo-realistic characters who released excessive amounts of blood during combat. Fighters must win a Best of 3 series in each round of combat, advancing towards the boss stages in the tournament. When a fighter has been defeated twice in the series, the opponent is given an opportunity to perform a special move called a "Fatality": a particularly violent finishing move that kills and often dismembers the opponent. MKII added Babalities – which turn the defeated opponent into a baby – and Friendships – in which the winner does something nice and non-violent for the defeated opponent, like handing him a rose. Parental discretion is advised.
