Survival Games

Post by Hallfiry »

I've noticed that among the older games, survival is a pretty rare genre (or theme in that case?). To be honest, I can personally remember only two such games, namely Stranded (created with Blitz 3D) and Schiffbruch. I think Robinson's Reqiem might also fall into the right category, but I'm not sure.

Do you know any other games about being lost somewhere and having to gather resources and get rescued (or something similar)?

PS: I'd like to see Schiffbruch here on this page, so I might gather a few versions and upload them somewhere.

I've heard about that game several times before but never bothered to check out what it was. The game is actually pretty nice I think.

I would say UnReal World comes pretty close to the survival genre. The game has been developed since 1992, and I think it started to lean towards survival gameplay somewhere in mid-90s.

I can't think of more games ATM but the topic interests me as well :)

Have you found any other games of the same type? I've heard of a relatively new title called Banished (not to be confused with an RPG from 2005), which is a city-building survival managerial strategy. It's a Steam release without any demo or anything, so haven't played it. There may be other games in a similar vein, as I vaguely remember mentions of by-then incomplete (?) projects, one in a post-apocalyptic setting IIRC.

On a side note (I thought I posted this here), the Exile RPG games have some survival elements in that the game world itself is a pretty harsh place, and you have to get food and items to keep your party going. Of course, it's pretty similar to many other RPG games, and is typical of the genre in general, but the setting makes it feel more a survival game. Same probably goes for Ultima Underworld.

A short Google trip yielded these potentially interesting results:
Wayward
RimWorld
Terasology
