Interesting result. I think this might be a case of quantity over quality. Despite appearances, I actually worked harder on the site in 2007 than in 2005.

One reason why there were so many games added in 2005 was because I was starting from 0. Every game ever published was a candidate, and I started by grabbing all of the Apogee games off of their download section, which was almost 40 games in the first few days! Less work went into each addition, since some of those games didn't have a review, and there were no screenshots, and I didn't have to figure out what graphics mode they were using. The hardest part of 2007 was rewriting the site to use a database (yes, there wasn't a real database until 2007). That made it possible to sort games by any criteria that the database had a column for, which meant going through every game on the site and tagging games with every piece of information imaginable. It made it possible to sort games by year of release, video mode, resolution, present legal status (shareware, freeware, public domain), past legal status (former shareware, former commercial), and level of completeness (shareware that includes the whole game, or just a few levels or episodes). I had to go back and take screenshots for every game (which still isn't done!). Then there was the blog, and creating the newsletter, and negotiating partnerships to try to keep myself from going broke. Between September 1 and December 31, I probably spent more hours working on the site than I had in the entire history of the site up to that point.

I get the message loud and clear: people want games! I'd like to think that all of the work that went into the "major update" has added value to the site. I know that a name and description aren't always enough for me; I like to see a screenshot of a game before I download it! All of this extra categorization and research mean that there's twice as much work to do before a game can be added to the site (anyone can take a screenshot of the first level. I actually have to play each game and find a screenshot that I think is representative of the gaming experience, i.e. a good screenshot!), but I think I made the right choice. Classic DOS Games is a big site, and it was time to start acting like it. If you want to play with the big boys, you have to offer people more than anyone else can.

And so, with that, I hope that 2008 will be the best year ever. Thank you all for your support, and tell a friend!
