Some missing game versions

Post by Litude »

I have some versions of certain games that seem to be missing from your website that I'd like to contribute. Also, for some I have managed to find the original installers in which the files were initially distributed in. All dates in the updated part of this post are of the format DD/MM/YYYY (as used on the website), old ones are MM/DD/YY. Any files hosted at Mega have their original file name or folder name.

3D Realms
Duke Nukem 3D
Found a Computer Gaming World exclusive one level demo version of Duke Nukem 3D. No idea why it was produced since the shareware version had already been released.

Apogee Software
Alien Carnage
Halloween Harry v1.0 was not an incomplete version for preview purposes. It was actually sold in Australia by Manaccom. Whether a shareware version was available I don't know...
[Noted on game page.]

Bio Menace
As you can read from here, the freeware release of the game is actually not the one that was being sold to customers. I think it was the tech support version of the game that got released since it has the debug cheats included. Also got the 1.0 registered version and a special shareware version published by Gold Medallion Software that doesn't have the nag screens which the normal shareware carries.

Commander Keen: Goodbye, Galaxy!
Firstly, the full name of this title is actually "Goodbye, Galaxy!". A minor change, but something that could be worth changing. I found a bunch of original installers for early releases as well as release dates for the versions. A note regarding version 1.2 is that it still isn't the original installer, but this distribution is closer to the original since EGAGRAPH.CK4 is still split and it includes the catalog files. Finally I've also linked the publisher specific versions.

Commander Keen: Invasion of the Vorticons
Highly doubt there was a version 1.0 of this game as I've been looking for it high and low (also, version 1.3 goes by the name 1KEENV2.ZIP and version 1.31 by 1KEENV3.ZIP). I know you have specified the beta date as to when the Gamer's Edge sample disk was released, but wouldn't it make more sense to have it listed as November 20th, 1990 which is when the EXE file was compiled? Also, I managed to come across a distribution of version 1.3 without BBS watermarks all over the text files. Finally, you're missing a few publisher exclusive versions.

Crystal Caves
Crystal Caves had two updates produced which didn't receive a new version number. The game was actually initially released on 15 October, with the first update appearing a week after release. A second updated version was also produced before 1.0a. However, this updated version was removed from shareware distribution and replaced with the 23/10/1991 version in 1993 by a mistake as they were hard to tell apart. While the first update does some noticeable changes, the shareware versions of the second update hardly differ since the update was mainly produced to fix a critical error in both the second and third episode making a level in both episodes unfinishable.

Duke Nukem
Found two slightly newer versions 1.0 of this game. The first version (the one you currently distribute) was released on 19/07/1991, the second one on 22/07/1991, while the last one was released on 01/08/1991 together with the initial releases of the second and third episodes. Only difference I've found thus far is that the newest 1.0 has a typo fixed when redefining joystick buttons, but there are probably more differences.

Jumpman Lives!
There are two versions of this game as well. Again neither identify themselves with any version number... No idea on any differences. A quick check of the registered version indicates that it is the same version as the updated shareware. Finally the proper file name for this shareware should be 1JMAN.ZIP (not 1JUMP.ZIP, it seems to be an unofficial repack).

Mystic Towers
Manaccom published versions 1.0 and 1.2 of this title, though I have only been able to find the 1.2 shareware. The information about v1.0 being a "preview" in the Apogee FAQ is completely false.

Next Generation Trivia
This game was not released in 1988 as the Apogee history page states (they might have gotten it confused with George Broussard's Amiga version of Trek Trivia, which was released in 1988 or simply Scott Miller's Trek Trivia). It becomes apparent when checking the February version of Trivia Whiz since the ordering information regarding Next Generation Trivia makes it obvious that the title had not yet been completed (it mentions there being 5 volumes, etc.). And naturally there's the copyright date of 1990 on the title screen. The release date as 1st of the months is a "good guess", but the months are correct.

Rise of the Triad
Might be better not to use a subtitle for this one, since "The HUNT Begins" is the subtitle of the shareware version but you also provide files for the registered version (patches).
Found the two missing versions of this game. Also got two LaserSoft Deluxe versions where the second one has been updated to not call it shareware but a "special" version. Since the levels are available on the 3D Realms website, this should be shareware/freeware. Finally some patches, the most interesting being the "Dopefish" patch. While not supported by Apogee/3D Realms, it was created by Joe Siegler and actually modifies the source code of the game itself making it interesting. Since it is available pretty much nowhere else, I think preserving it would be a good idea even if it is a REAL PAIN to get working properly...
A suggestion regarding the patches, how about just calling the patches Site License, CD-ROM/Power Pack and Floppy Disk version? Would make the description so much shorter.

There were two different builds of version 1.0. The initial release was on 03/02/1992, and the updated version was released on 12/02/1992. The one you are currently distributing as version 1.0 is the updated version.

The Thor Trilogy
I still insist on this game being renamed to "The Thor Trilogy", since Caves of Thor is the name of the first episode only... It is called as such in the menu of the game and on the official hint sheet. Also, the game was released in 1990 despite what the Apogee history page claims.
There are at least two different revisions of version 1.0 of the game. I've managed to find an earlier revision of it than the one you're distributing.

Trek Trivia
What makes you think only volume 1 had a version 3.0? I'm pretty sure that the Apogee Temple guy (can't remember his nickname atm) who originally acquired the game just put the most recent version of volume 1 in the distribution. Looking at the source code of Word Whiz it would probably take 10 minutes of work to get the updates carried over to each volume (since the questions were in a separate file altogether). Since version 3.0 was released on 20/07/1990 and Trek Trivia was sold at least until November 1991 I find it *very* hard to believe. My recommendation would be to update the distribution so that it includes version 2 of each volume and list it as such.
Also, this game also seems to have at least two different revisions of version 1.0. Furthermore, it seems the modify date of your 1.0 distribution is off.

Found a bunch of new versions of this. Once again, I'm pretty sure this game was released in 1990 and not 1988 as stated by the Apogee history page. The release date as 1st of the months is a "good guess", but the months are correct.

Wolfenstein 3D
Found an earlier version 1.4 of this, with the only difference being that is has an older phone number listed for Apogee in the ordering information (it has the goobers cheat). You have some release dates off, that of shareware 1.1 and sharewares 1.4 (cheat enabled version was released 15/12/1992, cheat disabled released 03/08/1993). Since the goobers disabled version was put into circulation only after even the updated v1.4 had been released, I don't think using the 1.4g domination is a good idea as it will only cause confusion.
I've also included all the official patches. Notably the shareware v1.1 to v1.2 doesn't work quite properly (it doesn't give you the same files as the real distribution) since it seems someone forgot that the shareware 1.1 release was actually an earlier build than the registered 1.1 release.

Word Rescue
Word Rescue received two small updates shortly after release and a bit later Redwood Games also distributed an even newer build themselves. None of the versions recognize themselves with any version number and all of them are just known as version 1.0. The version you're currently distributing as version 1.0 was the initial 18/03/1992 release. I've also included a files only distribution for version 3.0, DOS games should be in a DOS friendly format. ;)

This is another case where the version numberings are really a mess. Only one I'm sure of is 1.00 which has to be 1.00 but the one you've listed as version 2.0 is a mistake (the readme identifying the game as version 2.0 was added later into the archive). I've managed to find two different versions of the game distributed by Epic MegaGames, two versions distributed by Precision Software Applications, and one distributed by Juergen Egeling Computer. None of them identify themselves with version numbers in any documents, but I've found the initial Epic MegaGames Brix release under the name BRIX11.ZIP, the updated Epic release under the name BRIX12.ZIP and the German one carries the name BRIX160D.EXE. I've used these as there isn't anything else to go on and labeled the initial UK release as 1.1 too as the dates are just six days apart. Got nothing to go on labeling the later UK release though so I haven't listed a version number for it.

One Must Fall 2097
Found a few installers for this game. It also seems that there are three different shareware 1.0 versions of this game. The installer I'm providing has a few game affecting files (ENGLISH.DAT and OMF-END.BIN) which are an earlier revision than the files included in the file archive you currently have, so the versions are not entirely identical. I think you might want to list the current one as version 1.0 (10/07/94). I also found another version which too has the last modified file dated 10/07/94 but with a later time than in the previous ZIP. And since the installer files are dated 10/10/94, one could assume that was when this "revision" was released..
By the way, a registered 1.0 was never released, so with these the version history is complete.

Overkill
Found a few new versions of this game. By the way, the 12/11/12 version is identified as being version 1.2 in multiple places (filenames and German documents), so I think the 10/13/92 is version 1.0 and 11/11/92 is version 1.1. The first German version has a date of 11/30/92 but I assume it is still at version 1.1 but the localizing was completed a bit late. Also, the release dates you've currently listed for the shareware releases are wrong. The file modify dates should give a better idea of when the stuff was released.

Solar Winds
There's no version 2.0 of this game, the stuff in the document is a mistake. If you check the EXE and all other game affecting files in this so called 2.0 and 1.1, you will notice that they are byte for byte identical. [Updated game description to acknowledge this. Although only the documentation has changed, I consider it a legitimate "release", and it's notable for changing the name of the full version from Galaxy to Universe.] [Even version 1.0 calls the second episode Universe in SOLAR1.DOC. From where does this Galaxy thing originate from?]

Super ZZT
Found an UK version of this game. Also found another v1.1 that has a differing EXE with some outdated ordering info and a few more typos, so it is obviously earlier. By the way, version 2.0 is identical to 1.1 so it is mislabeled. Found some installers.
Shareware Version 1.0 - Installer
Shareware Version 1.5 - Installer (FILE_ID.DIZ has been added later to the archive, might want to remove it)

ZZT
The version of ZZT you have currently listed as version 3.1 is actually another copy of 3.2. The readme has faulty information.

Doom
You are missing a few public betas.
Shareware (Beta) Version 1.4 - Files
Shareware (Beta) Version 1.5 - Files
Shareware (Beta) Version 1.6 - Files

Doom 95
I think it would be smarter to have this as a separate title and using the EXE versions to sort them (the one you currently have specifies itself as being 3.0). Also here are two new versions (the last one is a slightly updated version of the distribution you provide; it's included in id Anthology):
Shareware Version 2.0 - Files
Shareware Version 3.0 (11/26/96) - Files/Installer

Heretic
You are missing the public three level beta released two days before the initial shareware release.
Public Beta Shareware - Installer [Game fails with corrupt WAD message] [Computer clock needs to be set before 94/12/24, FakeDate can take care of this]

Interplay Productions
Alone in the Dark
Found another demo version of this game.
Demo (12/01/94) - Files

Blackthorne/Blackhawk
I'm curious from where the version numbers you're currently listing originate. I've been unable to find any other version number than that of the setup utility which is 1.01 in all distributions. Also found a few new demo versions.
Blackthorne Shareware Version 08/26/94 - Installer
Blackhawk Shareware Version 09/15/94(?) - Files
Blackhawk Shareware Version 10/26/94(?) - Files

Found a few different version 1.0 shareware distributions of this. All differ slightly from each other.

Shareware Version 1.0 12/21/94 - Installer
Shareware Version 1.0 12/22/94 - Installer

Lost Vikings, The
Found a newer English demo version of this game (yours is dated 04/29/93). You'll notice the addition of copyright text to the title screen. Also found an earlier German demo version that unlike the one you have (yours is dated 09/17/93) doesn't have any copyright information on the title screen.
Shareware Version (07/15/93) - Files [Added to the site]
Shareware Version German (04/30/93) - Files [Dead link!!!]

Warcraft: Orcs & Humans
Found a few different demo versions of this game, thanks go to MrFibble for bringing this game up. Sadly none of the demo versions display a version number except for the one already present on the website (which is 1.12) so sorting them by modify dates is the only way to go. Also, it seems two versions were released the very same day so sorting them just by date won't do it.

Gray Design Associates
Hugo's House of Horrors
Found a few installers for this. Also found a most curious distribution of 1.7. It seems to be the original installer, yet it has the 1.6 EXE included and the only stuff that differs are the included documents (which claim it is indeed 1.7). Possibly 1.7 was a faulty release.
Also your version 2.0 says that it was distributed by the Software Creations BBS so it isn't the "normal" 2.0 distribution. Might want to label the version appropriately.

Shareware Version 1.3 - Installer

Shareware Version 1.9 - Installer (Part of PC-SIG disk, you should just distribute HUGO.EXE though)
Shareware Version 2.0 - Files [Requires unknown login information!!!]

Hugo II, Whodunit?
Found version 2.0 of this one and also found another revision of 1.0 which has some corrections made to the ordering info page which appears after quitting the game. It seems they were both released on the same day so the fact that the earlier 1.0 is still around is quite the miracle.
Shareware Version 1.0 (Updated) - Installer
Shareware Version 1.1 - Installer
Shareware Version 1.2 - Installer
Shareware Version 2.0 - Files [Contains advert.ems] [Can't you remove the file from the archive?]

Hugo III, Jungle of Doom!
I found this version of Hugo III which has text on the title screen stating that it was published by "RM". I originally found it from here. Also found an installer for version 1.0.
Shareware Version 1.0 - Installer
Shareware Version 2.0 RM - Files

Hugo's Horrific Adventure
Your version 1.4 is distributed by Author Direct Network, might want to label it properly.
Shareware Version 1.4 - Files
[This release is from 1996-06-13, whereas mine was from 1995-12-13. The documentation has been updated, there is a new version of the WISE installer and UnWISE uninstaller, and a trivial change to FILE0001.DAT, but no change to the game files. I consider this a documentation update only, and I choose not to archive multiple copies of the same version if they differ only by documentation to avoid things getting out of control. I'll keep the oldest release of each version, rather than the newest, in order to show what the version was like originally (and retain the original release date).]

Nitemare-3D
Found a bunch of new versions of this. Also your v1.0 and v2.0 are both "Author Direct Network", you might want to relabel them.
Shareware Version 1.0 - Files
Shareware Version 1.0 ASP - Files
Shareware Version 1.0 Public Software Library - Files
Shareware Version 1.1 - Files [Dead link!!!]
Shareware Version 1.1 Micro Star - Files

Shareware Version 1.9 University of Wisconsin-Parkside - Files

Nitemare-3D for Windows
Your version 1.3 is distributed by "The RoadHouse BBS" and your version 1.6 by "Author Direct Network". Might want to relabel those. Also found some new versions:
Shareware Version 1.0 Public Software Library - Installer
Shareware Version 1.3 - Installer
Shareware Version 1.3 ASP - Installer
Shareware Version 1.3 Limelight Media - Installer

The Computer Gaming World exclusive demo with a 5 scenario campaign unavailable in the regular demo.
CGW Demo - Installer (Not originally distributed in ZIP-file)

Monolith Productions
Blood
Here is the 0.91 demo which was included on the PC Gamer Cover Disc 3.2 (May 1997 issue). It says "DO NOT DISTRIBUTE" on the initializing screen, but it was most likely forgotten by the developers since a high profile gaming magazine like PC Gamer wouldn't distribute pirated/leaked versions of games.

Project Two Interactive
Jazz Jackrabbit 2
Found a new version of this game.
Shareware Version 1.20 (with high-quality intro movie) - Installer

Worms 2
The earliest demo version. You could name the demo versions according to the date in the ZIP file name since the current selection is already a bit confusing
Demo Version 09/05/97 - Installer

Union Logic Software Publishing
Teenagent
Found the European demo published by Metropolis Software House themselves.
Shareware Version UK/Europe - Files

Vinyl Goddess from Mars
Found an earlier demo of this dated 02/18/95 instead of 02/27/95 as your v1.0 is dated. The ordering information displayed in-game is probably the only differing thing between these two versions.
Shareware Version 1.0 (02/18/95) - Files

Virgin Interactive
Disney's Aladdin
Found an early demo of this which has another level. Also found a slightly newer version of this demo, dated 11/22/94 compared to the one you have dated 11/20/94 (has a new feature allowing music volume level control using PgDown+PgUp).
Demo Version 10/27/94 - Files [Dead link]
Demo Version 11/22/94 - Installer [Dead link]

I'll be updating this thread if I find new stuff and I'll also be removing stuff as it gets added to the website.

Yeah, awesome work! You must've spent quite a lot of time hunting all this stuff down.

One tiny little correction: your links to Tyrian 1.1 shareware and registered both go the shareware version.

Another tiny little correction: under the Monolith heading, you forgot to mention the name of the game (Blood).

Litude, when you are bored, you could search for some missing versions of Hugo II and Hugo III. :)
I know for sure version 1.1 exists of Hugo II and III, but they aren't on this site yet.

I also try to preserve the original archive name whenever possible. If the author uploaded an archive to a BBS, or made it available on the company website, then I preserve the archive name that was used to distribute the game. Did you zip any of these archives yourself (for instance, if they were originally unzipped in a folder on a CD or floppy disk)? If not, did you preserve the original filename?
Today entirely the maniac there is no excuse with the article.

I added some notes regarding file names. Stuff linked to cd.textfiles.com naturally have pretty much original file name, but stuff uploaded to my webspace (aoebeta.110mb.com/knights.x10hosting.com) don't necessarily have them. So I did some changes and now files uploaded to my webspace with names written in ALL CAPS have their original file name (or folder name in case the files were taken from a folder) in use. I'll be doing some checks as to whether I can also find out the original file names of some other files that I don't have them for yet (though some of my shareware CDs have archives that just use numbers for archive names so don't count on me getting all the original file names).

Also note that shareware versions of Epic MegaGames games which use installers that are just one file, were usually originally distributed without a ZIP file as just an EXE. I thought it would be nicer to preserve the installer modify date so I zipped them up. If you want to keep them zipped, changing the ZIP name to that of the EXE might be more accurate.

Sorry about that thing with the Blood shareware. Somehow that text had completely eluded me and I thought it was a legitimate early shareware release.

Is there any interest in historical PATCH releases?

I have Quake v0.91 to v0.92 somewhere.

Also note that most ARJ files are BBS sysop repacks.

I think you're also missing Radix: Beyond the Void Shareware Version 2.0 REMIX (Windows installer).

Hmm, for some reason it says "Corrupt WAD file" when I'm trying to launch the beta demo. A pretty old GZDoom build I happen to have reads the WAD file normally.

Thanks, had no idea Radix went up to version 2.0. Found the DOS distribution here, but the FILE_ID.DIZ has been modified. The original one can be gotten from the Windows installer.

Right, forgot to mention it needs you to set your computer time to December 23rd, 1994 or earlier to run IIRC. The FAKEDATE.COM utility provided with the DOOM Press beta also fixes this problem.

I guess that the Windows installer is the original thing, the devs probably wanted to make the game more appealing to Win95 users. The 2.0 REMIX version is something not to be missed, since many changes and improvements were made, most notably the ship can be now moved freely, i.e. it's no longer cruising unstoppably, and it is thus easier to navigate the levels. Game controls can be easily set to the now-standard WASD layout, and the only problem that I've encountered (playing in DOSBox) is that sometimes (very rarely) the mouse locks up, to which the only solution is to save the game, quit and then restart. It seems to happen only in certain parts of certain levels though.

I've just found Descent Shareware v1.4 in a ZIP archive, rather than in a self-extracting EXE:
Descent Shareware Episode v1.4

Also, Rise of the Triad Shareware v1.1 is archived at the Rise of the Triad Headquarters. I haven't checked yet the integrity of the archive though.
