Erotica

Post by Hallfiry »

Since "Immoral Cumbat" was requested to be added (and was rejected),I figured we should discuss the topic in general.
My catalog contains a flood of erotic games, mostly shareware games where you'd reveal a naked woman (via tetris, strip poker, etc.).
I'm quite interested in vulgar (including erotic) culture of the past, and erotic games of the 90s seem to be the comfortable gap between buying a porn mag at a local newsstand (usually there's one entire rack of magazines about naked women), and browsing porn online.

So for the sake of preservation of one of the more filthy corners of history: How should we deal with that stuff? I really don't want to ignore it entirely, as it's quite noticable part of my catalog :D

(A little remark regarding gay (man/man) erotics in gaming magazines of the 90s: The only ever MENTION that I've seen within thousands of magazines, was a little ad on one of the last pages of a german magazine from 1995 or 1996, that advertised a discreet postal shop for gay erotic vhs movies.)

Immoral Cumbat is a sorry affair that pretty much fails to be erotic as well as a game. I cannot imagine it being featured here just for the sheer embarrassment of it.

That said, I'm assuming that DOSGuy will generally object to any kind of obscene content here. I might be wrong though.

As for the theoretical question, a researcher should certainly not ignore a game for the reason of it not being suitable for all audiences, or even morally questionable for that matter. The late Theodor Lauppert wrote very fondly of the various "adult"-themed poker, puzzle, tetris and arcade games, and I think had some of them available at the Download Central. It wasn't his main focus but he did not shy away from the topic either. In one review he admitted that the poker game in question gave him nostalgic feelings.

It should be noted though that while Theodor Lauppert created a very good site (I think it's the only one of this kind that allows to browse games by country of origin - something I'd appreciate if it were done here), he did not exhaustively document any genre or type of game, so it's an objective yet to be completed for future generations.

Some of Theodor's reviews mention a site or two dedicated to erotic games, so maybe some documenting is on the way already. Personally I have no idea how large a population of such titles could be in the global pool of games for any given system/time period. Also complicating matters are cultural differences. For example, it seems that the Japanese take nudity a lot more lightly, and as a result there are images and situations found in games of a neutral or humorous tone (I'm not talking hentai here) which would be objectionable for a European to be included in a game aimed at a juvenile audience (hence regional censoring).

It's a stupid game, indeed. But then again... we're not here to judge :P

I do also suspect, that DOSGuy won't like it to be here and I agree that it doesn't fit the overall style of the content here. Classic DOS Games is explicitely targeted at a potential audience of minors who want to explore retro games. Thus it's important to keep things clean (in my understanding of moral and society n stuff).

Games suggested by users are known to have been rejected here in the past for not matching quality standards. Also, even pure research purposes do not preclude aesthetic judgement on the part of the researcher.
