I did indeed play SMB3. It's a challenging game, but it also manages to be fun. The only problem with the first three Super Mario Bros. games was common to almost all games of that era: you were expected to beat the game in one sitting. At that time, games usually didn't have save game slots or passwords, and the focus was on having enough skill to beat the game from beginning to end. If your goal was to win the game, you were probably going to skip as many levels as you could. Even in SMB1, who doesn't use the warp zones in 1-2 and 4-2 to skip 75% (24 out of 32 levels) of the game?

That limitation was, of course, eliminated in Super Mario All-Stars, and all the various remakes for Gameboy Color and Gameboy Advance, so it's finally worth trying to complete every single level.

Presumably the game designers realized that the vast majority of their levels weren't being played (you can go straight to World 8 from World 1 using two warp whistles), so the focus changed to completion. Your goal in most modern games is to beat every level, and the game allows you to save your progress to allow you to do that. This does remove some of the challenge, since you can play each level as many times as you need to, but I still had an absolute blast getting all 96 stars in Super Mario World. In fact, I've done it several times over the years. I've also gotten all 120 stars in Super Mario 64 several times, and when the game got too easy, I moved on to other challenges like collecting stars without collecting coins or using cannons or caps. SM64 is still one of my all-time favourite games. I just don't find Super Mario Galaxy very much fun for some reason. SM64 is definitely too easy, so I don't mind them making the game a little bit harder, but when they expect you to beat the level while taking practically no damage, that crosses the line from challenging to frustrating. I want more health!

Thanks for the endorsement of Super Mario Sunshine. If I find a copy anywhere, I'll be sure to try it out.

weird how they toned it down and hardened it up at the same time huh.
But seriously it's not that hard. Did you ever even play SMB3.

And seriously, you sap, just because Mario has a water pack. Go try Super Mario Sunshine. It's a meatier experience than Galaxies' disconnected worlds bullshit. Like seriously. And you get more than 3 health so even you should be able to get far >:D

As I mentioned in the article, your fake code won't replay because you made the score more than 8424 meters. Let me decode the code you created:

kick height=21
gravity=358
kick angle=25
power=697
unknown=380
throw angle=90
throw height=108
score=16734
name=Monkey
checksum=18413

If you enter a score of more than 8424, the movie won't play. To make your code work, I removed the first character from score and checksum to reduce them both by 10 000. Now we can watch your movie with this code:

http://www.totebo.com/monkey-kick-off.php?c=qportFoqtouUEorFBoUBopBFouErsoIONbSmoFspr

Now we can see that your kick was only 3546 meters, which isn't very impressive. Note that I didn't change any of the characteristics of your kick except for the score reported in the movie.

Interestingly, the movie still won't play at Miniclip.com with that code, so I kept reducing the score until it would. Miniclip.com won't play a movie with any score higher than 6023! I don't know if it's always been this way or if this is new.

Anyway, the correct code for the kick you posted is http://www.miniclip.com/games/monkey-kick-off/en/?c=qportFoqtouUEorFBoUBopBFortsuoIONbSmotqqt. Thanks for coming out!

I'm with you on this one. I've had DVDs crap out on me too often to keep count. I'm sick of MPAA's bullshit. As if they aren't going to make lots of money as soon as BluRay takes over as primary video medium. People will be forced to rebuild their movie collection they have paid for two times (or more) over (VHS-DVD-BluRay).

On subject though, backup rights should be unlimited. It reminds me of this DRM crap they're putting in games nowadays. Being granted a limited number of installs is absolutely ridiculous. Sometimes I need to download a pirated copy after buying a software package because it either doesn't work correctly or gives me a splitting headache. Ugh.

Now you're accusing me of cheating? I guess that proves my point about the members having more class than the staff.

Yes, it was very good for a player of my strength. It's certainly not an obscure word, nor even a highly valuable word (the word was only worth 10 points), and clearly not beyond my vocabulary. When sauzie played the D, I knew that I was going to play something on the triple word score immediately below. The words "pends" was immediately obvious in my rack. Then I saw that I had an I, and I happened to have two blanks. I had been holding the first one for several turns, and the second had arrived just recently, perhaps after my previous move. I realized that I could turn them into an s and a t and make stIPENDS. It's really pretty obvious when you think about it. It's not an improbable word composed of Qs or Zs or Js. All of the letters are worth a single point (and two of them aren't worth anything).

But let's examine this accusation further. Is there any evidence that I used an anagrammer for any previous move in this game? My pieces are the red pieces. I played fount, exes, ma, ae, fee, gag, stall, za, equal, ho, coin, aid, lo, wick, veto, and toe. Would a player of any strength need an anagrammer to produce any of those words? Why would I have used an anagrammer for just one move out of the entire game? Look at my rating and any of my other games. Is there any evidence that I've use an anagrammer in any other game? So why would I have used one in this game but not in any other game?

Accusing someone of cheating is the most unsportsmanlike offense that any player can commit. I've signed the Fair-Play agreement. Have you?

But you didn't register with your ISC handle, so you can slander me anonymously without producing a shred of evidence, or even any need for your claims to appear credible in any way.

I did remove the task bar from the screenshot because I didn't really want anyone to know what programs I run on my computer — since it's none of their business — but, just for you, I'll restore the original screenshot. Want a guided tour?

On the left we see my Inbox -- I use Thunderbird as my primary email client. To the right we see Firefox on my BMO Investorline page, where I invest my money. To the right are two Windows Explorer windows. I don't remember which directories I was in, but I'm sure that one of them was the directory where I keep the files for this website. To the right is WordBiz 1.8. To the right is Internet Explorer. Although I use Firefox, I've left Internet Explorer as my primary web browser. Although I prefer Firefox, Internet Explorer is still the dominant web browser and, as a webmaster, it's important for me to view the pages I create in multiple browsers to ensure that everything looks right. Firefox and Internet Explorer still render pages slightly differently. So I've left Internet Explorer as my primary browser, and that means that any links that I open from Thunderbird open in an Internet Explorer window. To the right is Paint, and the file name is "first bingo.bmp". That's what I called the screenshot before I converted it to "stipends.png" because it was the first bingo I ever played on ISC! I played another one later the same day against a different opponent. It was "CRITTERs" for 62 points.

Beyond the taskbar you'll see the icon for AVG Free, a terrific free antivirus program. Then you'll see four "17" symbols. Those are <a href="http://www.seventeenorbust.com" rel="nofollow">Seventeen or Bust</a> clients, which are searching for very large prime numbers to solve the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sierpinski_problem#The_Sierpinski_problem" rel="nofollow">Sierpinski problem</a>. Finally, there is an icon which represents removable media. I have a 3.5" drive that contains a combined floppy disk and flash media reader, and it causes that icon to be displayed all the time.

Any questions?
